Three years ago we said goodbye to a beloved band who was highly respected within the scene. The boys of Underoath vowed they would never share a stage together under that name again. Fortunately for us, they lied. In August of 2015, the boys took to Facebook to announce their return to the stage as Underoath. With nearly every date sold out, it was safe to say we missed them. On April 14, 2016 I had to witness for myself this great rebirth.

Opening for a tour like this holds a lot of pressure over a musician. Though, I believe that Caspian handled it quite well. This 5-piece, all instrumental band would not be my first choice to open a show of this genre. While Caspian are highly respected throughout the rock world (and with good reason), they just didn’t seem to fit as an opener for Underoath. Their music is image inducing, almost like hearing the emotions of a great novel with no words. I cant help but feel like their music belongs in TV and movies, it would thrive there; but then again its also quite fulfilling when you just need some clean music without being cluttered with lyrics. They’ll continue to do great things and people will continue to listen.

For three years I had been kicking myself for not seeing Underoath on their farewell tour. After their break up tour, they walked off stage promising that they were done as Underoath. Yet, as the boys soon realized, all they needed was time. Time to grow as individuals and as musicians; time to heal old wounds and mend friendships; time to realize just how loved they were by so many people. After three long years there’s still only one word to describe them, incredible.

I’ve been able to see front-man Spencer perform with his other band, Sleepwave; and while they are equally remarkable in their different music styles, it’s hard not to notice how much more at home he looks performing in Underoath. Spencer mentioned his and his fellow bandmates’ appreciation to their fans by saying, “seeing as this show [has been] sold out for months, [I think] it’s safe to say you want us to come back.” He also showed some individual fan-love to a young man who has proudly seen Underoath perform live over 50 times and another woman who has seen them 35 times. Regardless if it was your first time seeing them live or your 47th time, it was a night that will be impossible to forget.

With the end of an era to the rebirth of a new beginning, you cannot deny the impact that Underoath has had all over the world and throughout the music scene. I have a feeling this won’t be the last of our beloved Underoath, to which I say, good.
